Building Communities Beyond Bias

Dear Friends,

A few weeks ago, our team met with community members to introduce plans for our new North County development. As we shared our vision, the questions began:

"Will the residents be dangerous?"
"What about our children?"
"Will this change our neighborhood?"

While those questions were incredibly difficult to hear, they were also a reminder that misunderstanding still exists. For many of our residents, the greatest barrier to belonging may still be the assumptions others make before ever meeting them.

Promise Community Homes began nearly 60 years ago because nine founding families refused to accept those assumptions. They looked beyond stigma, stereotypes, and fear to create seven homes where their children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) could live safely, independently, and as valued members of the community.

Today, more than 80 homes later, we sometimes find ourselves confronting the very same misconceptions those founding families worked so hard to overcome. Our response has never changed: EVERYONE deserves a place to call home. EVERYONE.

We remain committed to creating community-integrated housing where adults with IDD are not hidden away, but welcomed as neighbors.

When our residents are supported with stable housing in welcoming communities, over time, perceptions shift, relationships form, and people come to see what we have always known: people with IDD are neighbors, friends, and community members who deserve the same opportunities to live in a place they proudly call home. Because they are people, too.

Warmly,

Matt Elmore

Executive Director

Raising the Roof on Stable Futures

During a recent home inspection, our team discovered that the roof of one of our homes had reached the end of its lifespan after years of protecting those beneath it. To ensure the home remained safe, secure, and well-maintained, our Operations team quickly partnered with a local vendor to coordinate a full roof replacement before larger issues could arise.

Today, the two residents who call this house home can continue to enjoy the stability, comfort, and peace of mind that come with a safe and supportive living environment.

When a House Becomes a Home

The two residents who moved in to our most recent home purchase in St. Louis County have spared no time adding furniture, decorations, and personal touches. In just a few months, what was once an empty room now has matching chairs, flowers above the fireplace, bookshelves, and more!

This is where the mission of Promise Community Homes becomes fully realized: when a house becomes not just a shelter, but a space where residents with intellectual and developmental disabilities can truly call their own for the rest of their lives.

PCH Pool Used for Life-Saving Training

View the News Story on FOX2

Promise Community Homes had the honor of hosting the Creve Coeur Fire Protection District, Mercy Hospital St. Louis, and the SwimOn foundation at our indoor pool for a pediatric drowning simulation with a medical training mannequin.

As we enter summer months and the risk of drownings unfortunately increases, emergency responders and clinicians must be prepared to handle these types of situations. The heated, indoor pool at the PCH community center provided a realistic environment where participants in the training were able to practice real-world applications in a drowning scenario.

Promise Community Homes is proud to be able to provide the setting for this imperative training simulation.
